I have always heard the term Pace Car. Until now, I had never seen one. Last August, while on vacation in Orlando, Fl. visiting my mom, I came across a 1964.5 Indy 500 Pace Car coupe. According to the Pace Car registry, there are only 20 some cars known to have survived from the 180 coupes made by Ford. None of the 17 convertibles have surfaced to date. This coupe, unbelievably, was still in the hands of its original owner. Located in the glove box was an astounding sight. The original registrations for the first two years that the car was driven, as well as the original invoice were located inside. The car was driven very rarely, running the odometer up to 70,000+ miles in over 39 years of being on the road. It was garage kept most of its life and is rock solid. The owners knew it was time to pass it over to someone who would restore it better than new. The car still has the original data plate showing color code C, which is designated by Ford as Pace Car White. The plate also has the interior code 42, which was standard in all Pace Cars. This car is absolutely a perfect addition to the Carter Collection and is the 26th Mustang I have owned to date.

I have done it again. I located another 1964.5 Indy 500 Pace Car coupe.I found this car accidentally in a junk yard of Mustangs and various other junk cars. The car came out of Mechanicsville, Virginia. The owner had no idea, not even the slightest clue, what he had just sold me. Sometimes in life you are the bug and sometimes you are the windshield.

There are fewer than 30 of the original pace car replicas that have survived. I am proud to say that I have two of them. 1964.5 Indy 500 pace cars were recently named the 37th rarest type of mustang out of 100.

A NEW DISCOVERY THIS WEEK, THERE APPEARS TO BE A SET OF CONTACT PLATES LOCATED INSIDE THE DOOR JAMS OF 1964.5 INDY 500 PACE CARS. THE PLATES ARE LINED UP WITH THE LIGHT SWITCH . OVER 2 DOZEN PEOPLE THAT HAVE PACE CARS HAVE CONFIRMED THIS FEATURE ON THEIR CAR, SO IT SEEMS ALL PACE CARS HAVE THIS FEATURE.
